Summary

I devoured this book。 I usually take a month at least to finish a book because I just I soak in every detail so I can to paint a better picture in my mind of the world the writer is describing to me but this story… it was so beautiful and descriptive。 I could imagine the beautiful simplicity of The Little Palace and its many intricate wood carvings and delicate decorations。I could feel Alina’s fear and every other emotion she experienced throughout this book as if I was actually there。The only r I devoured this book。 I usually take a month at least to finish a book because I just I soak in every detail so I can to paint a better picture in my mind of the world the writer is describing to me but this story… it was so beautiful and descriptive。 I could imagine the beautiful simplicity of The Little Palace and its many intricate wood carvings and delicate decorations。I could feel Alina’s fear and every other emotion she experienced throughout this book as if I was actually there。The only reason why I did not give this book a five star is because I feel that the story could’ve been a bit more suspenseful so instead of something just happening with a tiny bit of warning you could really make the reader nervous and on edge。 I love that in a book。 Knowing something is about to happen but not knowing what。 Example:A light flickering。 Throwing Alina into darkness。Alina realising something is terribly wrong。 Running for Mal but he’s not there。 She looks desperately fearful of what she’ll find。Keep her looking。 Fearing。 Keep the reader scared。Then the character find whatever happened。Make it like a punch to the gut for the reader。Sorry I’m no writer so that’s probably not what professional writers do to enhance their writing。 I just thought I could give some suggestions from a readers point of view。 。。。more

I would have absolutely adored this book in middle school。 I found it too childish and flippant as a freshman in college。 Female protagonist who “isn’t like the other girls”。 The cliche of the “darkling”。 Wasn’t my favorite, but was a fun beach read

Honestly, I was expecting better。 The characters felt flat, and there was a real lack of detail in terms of describing elements of the world/the general world-building beyond clinical descriptions of setting。 The relationships and attractions between both platonic and romantic characters felt forced as a result。 I felt like I was being told to believe certain things and feel certain feelings without those things actually being demonstrated more subtly and thoughtfully。

How do I put this。。。 Leigh Bardugo is a good author, I do really enjoy her writing but。。。 Shadow and Bone felt empty in a way。 I like the characters, I like the world and I am going to continue reading the series, but this one felt like the intro song to an album。 I was constantly waiting and waiting, flipping through each page and hoping on the next one something was going to happen。 But。。。 it didn't really? I think I was expecting much more from this than I really should have。 It was fine but I felt let down by the uneven pacing。

Okay so this is a tough one。 I liked and enjoyed the first half of the book buuuut I don’t know, it just didn’t give that oomph factor and I felt like it ended too quickly? I have to say I expected more buuut meh。。。 I observed in Bardugo’s writing that it’s a little bit modern-ish。 Although there are parts that it was archaic, second it wasn’t。 Did they use the word the word “okay” in the 19th century? I’m pretty sure they didn’t。Overall it was okay and was still fun to read! Overall, Bardugo is a wonderful storyteller and did a lovely job with this novel。 I absolutely adore her world-building skills -- the world of the Grishaverse is especially well thought out and vibrant。 Because I was exposed to the more rich characters of Six of Crows first, however, I think I was spoiled。 In particular, I found Alina's character lacked the depth I've grown to love in the characters of Bardugo's later works。 Starkov seems flat to me compared to Kaz or Nina。 Part of that might ha Overall, Bardugo is a wonderful storyteller and did a lovely job with this novel。 I absolutely adore her world-building skills -- the world of the Grishaverse is especially well thought out and vibrant。 Because I was exposed to the more rich characters of Six of Crows first, however, I think I was spoiled。 In particular, I found Alina's character lacked the depth I've grown to love in the characters of Bardugo's later works。 Starkov seems flat to me compared to Kaz or Nina。 Part of that might have had to do with how the story was told though -- I would have loved to read Mal's perspective。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I loved this book the twist turners and finding out what the Darkling was capable of and I LOVE Mal he was helpful to Alina and for once in books I’ve read the main character isn’t as annoying as you would expect。I just finished the Netflix tv show and omg it’s sooooo good I love the plot twists and it was casted really well of each character。

This is the kind of book I would have devoured in high school。 I enjoyed it。 I haven’t seen the Netflix show yet, so I can’t give much comparison there, though。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This is a 4。5 book for me。 I thought that fantasy books just weren’t for me but I looked forward to reading this book every day。 I loved seeing Alina’s progression and how in choosing herself she then is able to hone in her power。 I don’t know how I didn’t see the Darkling twist coming but it totally threw me ha! Can’t wait to read the next books and watch the Netflix series!

Ok listen, you can hate me if you want。 I was really excited for this book, but I got about a third of the way through and 1, didn’t understand anything that was going on (which may be on my part) 2, wasn’t enjoying the story and 3, had to read it out LOUD to myself just to get myself to focus。 I very rarely give up on a book, but I was just insanely disappointed in this one。

Mateo

This was *not* a good book。 I listened to it after watching the tv series at the behest of my friends。 The character development was poor, the writing was overly eloquent and without substance, and everything revolved around Alina。 Anything that happened was about her。 Not a great book, would not recommend。

8th grade and upBook 42 of 2021 is my first Leigh Bardugo book, but it won't be my last! I missed this book when it was first released。 Since I'm always focusing on what's new, I completely skipped this series。 I decided to give it a go, because it's trending and I want to recommend it a lot for summer。 I haven't watched the show yet, but that's on my agenda when I get home。 8th grade and upBook 42 of 2021 is my first Leigh Bardugo book, but it won't be my last!
